The FarMHealth Project

Mental health is a major societal issue in Ireland, and farmers are particularly at risk due to their higher rates of depression, anxiety, stress and burnout. The FarMHealth project aims to empower farmers to seek the help that they need when experiencing mental health issues. Our project centres farmers voices at each of it's three stages. First, we conducted a national assessment of health issues that Irish farmers face (such as sleep issues, burnout, and alcohol use) as well as their understanding of mental health and help-seeking. Second, we conducted interviews with farmers and key farming stakeholders on the barriers and facilitator's to farmers' help-seeking and preferences for an intervention. Third, based on the needs of the Irish farming community, we designed skills-based educational material to help farmers identify the help they need, when they need it.
